klaviyo plans pricing explained

At first glance, Klaviyo's prices seem pretty expensive. Especially when compared to other email marketing platforms like Mailchimp.

However, the purpose of this article is not to compare Klaviyo with other email marketing platforms.

This article explains how Klaviyo charges and how you can avoid paying more than you should.

Understand "active profiles"

The most important thing you should know about Klaviyo's pricing plans is that they are based on the number of "active profiles". They are not based on the number of subscribers.

It is often a source of great confusion for ecommerce retailers.

Many new converters to Klaviyo are surprised at the number of active profiles they have in their account. The result is that they have a higher price plan than expected.

What is an active profile?

If you click on the "Profiles" link in the navigation to the left of the Klaviyo administrator, the total number of profiles is shown broken down by active and deleted.

Active or deleted profiles
The active profile simply means every email contact that is not deleted. Includes subscribers and non-subscribers as well as customers and non-customers.

In the following example, many merchants expect to pay for the 4,208 active subscribers. In fact, the tariff plan would be based on the 7,102 active profiles.

Profiles you pay for
From this point on, most marketers ask who all these other profiles are and where they come from.

All profiles or electronic contacts come from two main sources:
  • Subscription to a registration form from Klaviyo or the subscription page of his website
  • Validation for any other platform integrated in Klaviyo. It's usually an ecommerce platform like Shopify.
Watch the short video below to understand how Klaviyo adds contacts to his account.

How much does Klaviyo cost?

Like most SaaS platforms, Klaviyo uses tiered pricing.

If you have 250 active profiles or less, Klaviyo is free.

There are certain functional limitations with the free plan. For example, you cannot delete the Klaviyo brand at the end of emails. Also, you can't remove the double subscription feature, which is a good thing in most cases.

However, every newly created shop can be entered at ground level.

It should also be noted that it includes all the other features like integrations, data science, some automation, etc. that other email service providers calculate separately. This is important if you want to understand the total cost of your ESP.

Paid plans vary between $ 20 and $ 650 a month, covering 251 active profiles to 45,000 active profiles. There is no limit to the number of emails that can be sent per month within this range.

Between 45,001 and 210,000 active profiles, monthly plans vary between $ 700 and $ 2,000. With these plans, you can send between 500,000 and 2.1 million emails per month.

In addition, you are in the league and the prices are negotiated.

Use Klaviyo's price calculator to estimate how much it will cost your business.

Is Klaviyo worth it?

Under the Tier 1 plan, $ 20 per month equals 8 cents per contact. At the higher level, this drops to 1 c per contact. Compare these numbers to the amount you normally pay per click on a Google advertising campaign.

However, the true value of Klaviyo is recognized when you understand that it is much more than a messaging platform. Klaviyo's surprising segmentation, especially for e-commerce websites, sets it apart from normal messaging platforms.

So you avoid too much

The key to reducing Klaviyo's costs is to understand that "active" is not the same as "actively engaged".

Try to segment all active profiles (subscribers, non-subscribers, customers, non-customers) according to their actual engagement. You will be amazed at how many of them have shown little or no commitment.

There are two good reasons to delete these non-validated profiles:

  • By reducing the number of active profiles, you can probably downgrade your tariff. I have helped many customers reduce their monthly rates from 50 to 75%.
  • Deleting non-verified profiles improves opening and click rates. This will improve the reputation and deliverability of your list in the future.
It is a win-win situation!
